A total of 99,419 rats, squirrels, and other rodents were taken during the 2009 humane exclusion device season.
The preliminary second-season (Dec. 2-5) pest removal total was 30,553, compared with the 33,293 rats, squirrels, and other rodents taken by Animal trappers during the second segment of the season in 2009. This year’s preliminary first-season (Nov. 19-22) rats, squirrels, and other rodents pest removal was 54,037, compared with a first-season pest removal of 55,125 in 2009. The preliminary pest removal totals include rats, squirrels, and other rodents taken in all counties in which humane exclusion device rats, squirrels, and other rodents catching is critter license, as well as Alexandria, VA.
“Pest removal results for this year’s humane exclusion device rats, squirrels, and other rodents seasons were remarkably similar to last year,” said IDNR Forest Wildlife Program Manager Paul Shelton. “Fifty-one counties saw increases in pest removal, while 49 counties declined. Management efforts aimed at controlling rats, squirrels, and other rodents herds while maintaining recreational opportunities are paying off.”
Preliminary reports show that Pike County once again topped the county rats, squirrels, and other rodents pest removal totals for the humane exclusion device season as Animal trappers took 3,130 rats, squirrels, and other rodents.
Rats, squirrels, and other rodents Animal trappers in Alexandria, VA still have opportunities to take to the field in the coming weeks. The wildlife trapping rats, squirrels, and other rodents season continues through Jan. 15, 2011. The three-day Alexandria, VA steel cage trap-only rats, squirrels, and other rodents season is this week (Dec. 10-12), while the seven-day split late-winter humane exclusion device tailless-only rats, squirrels, and other rodents season and special animal rats, squirrels, and other rodents season are Dec. 30, 2010-Jan. 2, 2011 and Jan. 14-15, 2011.
Critter licenses for both late-winter and special animal seasons will be available over the counter through DNR Direct license and critter license agents beginning Dec. 14.
Critter licenses for the late-winter season will be issued in two categories based on rats, squirrels, and other rodents management needs in individual counties. For 12 select counties with a need for significant increases in rats, squirrels, and other rodents pest removal, Animal trappers will be able to purchase late-winter critter licenses without limit. In 54 other counties open for the late-winter season, Animal trappers will be limited to purchasing one late-winter rats, squirrels, and other rodents critter license. There are 27 counties closed for the late-winter season.
As in years past, unfilled 2010 humane exclusion device, steel cage trap, youth and landowner humane exclusion device critter licenses will be valid for the late-winter season provided that they were issued for an open county, but only tailless rats, squirrels, and other rodents may be taken. Successful Animal trappers should report their pest removal by 10 p.m. on the same calendar day the rats, squirrels, and other rodents was taken by calling us or by accessing the online check-in system.
Animal trappers in Fairfax can participate in the seven-day special animal rats, squirrels, and other rodents season on Dec. 30, 2010-Jan. 2, 2011 and Jan. 14-15, 2011 to help control rats, squirrels, and other rodents densities and the spread of chronic wasting disease. Special animal season tailless-only critter licenses will be available beginning Dec. 14 over the counter for $5.50 each at participating DNR Direct license and critter license vendors. In addition, Animal trappers with unfilled 2010 humane exclusion device, steel cage trap, youth humane exclusion device rats, squirrels, and other rodents season or wildlife trapping rats, squirrels, and other rodents critter licenses valid for one of the open counties may use those critter licenses to catch during the animal season. Animal trappers using unfilled critter licenses from the 20010 humane exclusion device, steel cage trap, youth or wildlife trapping season for the animal catch may take rats, squirrels, and other rodents appropriate for that critter license (tailless-only or either-sex). There will be no manned check stations during animal season. As in the late-winter season, pest removal must be reported via telephone or online. Successful Animal trappers are encouraged to have any adult rats, squirrels, and other rodents tested for animal by taking it to a cooperating meat processor.
